... so the world goes round and round
with all you ever knew -
They say the sky high above
is Caribbean blue ...
- Enya, "Caribbean Blue"
I went to Beijing for a conference at the end of June, 2010, and had a couple of free afternoons to check out the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites). The conference itself was on the very nice Tsinghua University campus, near some beautiful gardens. The photos here are from these 3 locations, and all were taken with my sub-optimal and really pretty disappointing cell phone camera (all I had with me).
Overall, the trip was good and fun. Beijing is an interesting but very crowded city of ~20 million people. From the moment I arrived until the moment I left a week later, there was a thick haze in the air (water particles?) that blocked all views of the sky, clouds, and stars, and the light from the sun was strongly scattered. By the end of the week, I had an unexpectedly strong urge to listen to Enya's "Caribbean Blue". (Particularly unexpected since I never choose to listen to Enya, but this song is gorgeous!) On the flight out of Beijing, I was happy to find it on my Ipod, and was listening to it as the plane broke through the haze and clouds, with clear blue sky visible again. Ahhh.
