Take the beauty of the red sand dune sea at Sossusvlei, mix it with mountainous grassy landscape and some of the wildlife of Etendeka, disperse a few of the high mountains like in the Naukluft, throw in a few granitic mounds ("koppies") like Spitzkoppe and Blutkoppe, add the comfort and ease of Etendeka and Erongo and the luxury and food quality of Mowani, include the solitude and fun of camping, and combine with the excitement of Etosha - this mix starts to approach the wonderful experience of staying at
Wolwedans.
There could not have been a better way to end such a great trip than by staying at Wolwedans. As at some of our other stops, it was a small tented camp, but an incredibly fantastic one. Almost instantly it felt like we had known the staff for years, thanks especially to Lucas, our wonderful and insightful guide, and the Dune Lodge manager James.
The lodge sits in the middle of an enormous private wilderness reserve (the Namib-Rand reserve), and by staying at Wolwedans, visitors can explore (with guides) the various parts of the beautiful area. There are lots of big animals (zebra, oryx, ostriches, springbok, and a few giraffe), and the same gorgeous red sands as at Sossusvlei upon which the Dune Lodge and tents are built.
There's so much that could be said about Wolwedans, but perhaps by leaving it at that I can more easily forget the details - then experience the plase all over again anew when we return.
